Ardleigh Green win Havering Indoor Athletics Competition

08 Dec 2015

Congratulations to our Year 3 and 4 and Year 5 and 6 Indoor Athletics teams who both won their respective competitions at Hornchurch Sports Centre last week. Well done children your hard work , effort and commitment to the Athletics Squad has really paid off.

A big thank to Mrs Snelling, Mrs Gibbons, Mr Harris and Mrs Shepherd for their hard work too.

Years 5 and 6 will now represent Havering in the London School Games finals in 2016.

Report from Havering Sports Collective

On the 1st and 2nd December 2015, Hornchurch Sports Centre was inundated with 100s of children aged 7 to 11 taking part in the Havering Sportshall Athletics events.

The competitions were compered by Adam Burgess of Sportshall UK who managed to raise the roof with over 500 high pitched voices screaming at the same time!

On the 1st December, year 5 and 6 children competed against each other in order to find a winner to represent Havering at the London School Games finals in 2016. Children took part in 6 relay and track events and 6 field events gaining points for their team. Ardleigh Green Junior School were victorious for the 4th year running with Upminster Junior, winners of the morning session, and St Edwards a close 2nd and 3rd. At all the sports competitions this year it has become almost as important to win one of our coveted School Games Values awards and for year 5 and 6 the winners were as follows: Determination – Squirrels Heath Junior, Mawney and Wykeham. Passion – Towers Junior, Clockhouse and Scargill.

During the day Parklands Junior School took the opportunity to hand over the School Games Torch to St Edwards Primary. The School Games Torch was crafted by a technician at Coopers Coborn School in 2014 and is on a journey around all the Collective member schools. With it is a passport in the form of a display book, and each school is encouraged to show evidence of how they have used the Torch in their school. So far there are photos, poems, written accounts of competitions and Torch relays which will build up to be a comprehensive cultural celebration of the wider aspects of sport.

On the 2nd December it was the turn of year 3 and 4 children to take part. This is the first year that the event has been held for this age group and the excitement was palpable. Over 400 children jumped, raced and threw their way to accruing points for their team. Winners of the morning session were Nelmes Primary, although they were pushed narrowly into 3rd place by the end of the afternoon session where Ardleigh Green took overall first place and St Edwards came in 2nd. The School Games Values awards were won as follows. Self-Belief – Branfil, La Salette and Hylands. Honesty – James Oglethorpe, Towers Junior and Dame Tipping.

As with all our events we are dependent upon young leaders to assist and thanks goes to Emerson Park Academy, Frances Bardsley Academy and Campion School for providing the workforce. Thanks also to all our adult helpers and especially to Adam Burgess of Sportshall UK who provided all the equipment and ran the event.
