Cross Country Report from Havering Sports Collective

23 Nov 2015

Well what a morning it was at the Stubbers Outdoor Centre for the primary cross country on 19th November 2015! More than 500 children aged 7 to 11 came along with their teachers, parents, grandparents and other extended family to run between 1200m and 2000m around a wet muddy course.

The rain began just as the year3/4 girls race was on the start line and continued until after the final event although, it did little to dampen the enthusiasm of children and adults alike. The year 3 and 4 children ran a 1200m lap of Coy’s Lake cheered on by the spectators. With 6 children in each team to count, and the lowest combined score to win, St Josephs Catholic Primary won both the girls and boys events with 140 and 47 points respectively. This was the first time a year 3 and 4 event had been included and all children ran remarkably well with a couple of boys finishing with only one trainer on – a true example of grit and determination!

The year 5 and 6 children had a longer loop to run this year starting around Russell Lake and covering 2000m across the Stubbers site. By the time these races were under way the rain had set in and the mud was knee high! Despite this the children ran their hearts out in front of the very wet supporters and all but 4 children managed to finish.

Winners of the girls’ race were Ardleigh Green Juniors with 122 points and the boys’ race was won by Upminster Junior with 147 points.

Mention must be made of the Stubbers Staff who designed the courses and made sure that the event ran safely, and also to the Coopers Students who stood out in the rain helping to marshall and cheer the children on. Sophie Rand and Ben Davis from Coopers ran as “hares” to ensure that the pace was sensible. The finish line was managed by Angela Hill and students from Campion who did a stellar job of giving out over 500 raffle tickets to the runners.

The Collective would like to say a massive thank you to all teachers and school staff and parents and supporters who braved the adverse weather conditions and who made the event so enjoyable and successful.
