Welcome To Year 5!

14 Sep 2017

Hello Aspen parents and guardians.

Welcome to the world of Year 5. I hope your child has enjoyed the first few days of their new school year (I know I certainly have.) We have got stuck straight in and they are all working very hard already.
We are enjoying our new topics already, such as: Ancient Egypt, Earth Sun and Moon, Clarice Cliff and Hockey. Look out on Twitter for photographic updates of these and give us a like!

I hope you received your Dojo invitations and reminder about signing the charters in the new homework diaries (from pages 5-11.) I have received lots of positive feedback, from the children, about the new range of books available in Year 5. Your child is now either Lilac, Turquoise or Dark Blue and we will monitor their progress on these bands. I look forward to communicating through the diaries and offer the children a Dojo per reading recorded with an adult’s signature but I am happy for the children to take ownership of the other boxes.

Timestables and arithmetic tests will take place each Monday and your children need to be practising these skills at home. They now have access at home to Language Nut, Timestable Rockstars, RM Easi and Mathletics, as well as daily practise in school.

Spellings are also tested each Monday and new ones delivered. I have encouraged children to share their results with you at home and continue to work on those they are still struggling with. Each term, we will also be testing the 50 Year 5 Spelling List words and these will also need to be practised and reviewed at home.

From now on, homework will be sent out every Friday and will need to be back in school by the following Friday. Children should also place their work in their own folders. Once we have established a suitable day, details of a homework club will be sent home. This homework club is for children who do not have access to computers/internet at home or who struggle to complete their homework independently. Please find more details of the weekly homework on the ‘Homework page’ and spare sheets are available in the classroom.

Our class will have Outdoor PE on a Friday and Swimming on a Wednesday, where they will need to have the correct uniform with them. (Now it is getting colder, they will need their tracksuits with them.)

I look forward to meeting you all at school at our coffee morning and at the end of this half term.

Best wishes,

Miss Holmes
