WELCOME TO YEAR 5

04 Sep 2018

Hello Aspen parents and guardians.

Welcome to the world of Year 5. I hope your child enjoys the first few days of their new school year (I know I certainly am). They are all working very hard already.

We will be enjoying our new topics, such as: Ancient Egypt, Earth Sun and Moon, Clarice Cliff and Hockney. Look out on Twitter for photographic updates of these and give us a like!

Please remember to sign the charters in the new homework diaries (from pages 9-11.) I have received lots of positive feedback, from the children, about the new range of books available in Year 5. Your child is now either Lilac, Turquoise or Dark Blue and we will monitor their progress on these bands. I look forward to communicating through the diaries and would be  grateful if an adult would sign in the comments section, children can complete the date and book columns. You will see that there is a new section called Give Me Three where the children should write any unfamiliar words they might find in their reading book, in order to expand their vocabulary.

Times-tables and arithmetic tests will take place each Monday and your children need to be practising these skills at home. They now have access at home to Language Nut, Times Tables Rockstars, RM Easi and Mathletics, as well as daily practise in school.

Spellings are also tested each Monday and new ones delivered. I have encouraged children to share their results with you at home and continue to work on those they are still struggling with. Each term, we will also be testing the 50 Year 5 Spelling List words and these will also need to be practised and reviewed at home.

From now on, homework will be sent out every Friday and will need to be back in school by the following Friday. Children should also place their work in their own folders. Once we have established a suitable day, details of a homework club will be sent home. This homework club is for children who do not have access to computers/internet at home or who struggle to complete their homework independently. Please find more details of the weekly homework on the ‘Homework page’ and spare sheets are available in the classroom.

Our class will have Outdoor PE on a Friday and Swimming on a Wednesday, where they will need to have the correct uniform with them. (Now it is getting colder, they will need their tracksuits with them.)

I look forward to meeting you all at school at our coffee morning and at the end of this half term.
Best wishes,

Miss Holmes
